Yard Upkeep – Increasing The Value Of Your Home

Well-maintained houses usually sell at better rates than those needing a lot of repair work, and the outer appearance of a home also counts for its value and worth. Most people tend to maintain the inside of their house but forget that the buyer obviously looks at the overall appearance of the house before moving indoors to check on the details.

If the buyer’s first impression tells him that the yard is not well-kept, he might not be interested in going inside. Seeing an unkempt yard may lead him to an assumption that the inside of the house must be in an even worse state and he may not wish to go inside to take a look.

Maintaining your lawn can not only create a good impression on your guests or prospective buyers, but it also increases the monetary value of your house. A house that looks neat and trimmed adds to the beauty of the neighbourhood as well. There are some very simple tasks that can give your lawn an elegant look and raise the appeal of your house:

  • Mowing the grass frequently helps to maintain it neatly. Always set your cut at the highest blade setting. Longer grass helps in reducing the possibility of weeds and pests. Cutting off one-third area of the grass blades is an ideal size.
  • Make sure that the blades of your lawn mower are sharp. If they are blunt, sharpen them before cutting your grass. In general, sharpening your blades after every ten hours of mowing is a good practice.
  • Never mow a wet lawn because the soil is soft and if you compress it by running a mower over it, the roots will be unable to gain access to the air in the atmosphere. Gradually, your grass will wilt away and die.
  • Just like human beings, plants also need water for survival. However, unlike us, they do not require 8-10 glasses of water every single day. Water your yard less often but whenever you do it, do it deeply. This means that you can water it for an hour, but do it only once a week or once in every two weeks.
  • Depending on the weather conditions, you can also lessen the time duration of watering your lawn. For instance, in the rainy season, if the grass is already getting enough water, then you do not need to give it more.
  • Fertilizers are ideal for growing lush green lawns but out of all the varieties available, the organic fertilizers yield the best results. Although more expensive than the other types, they are less damaging for your soil as well as for the environment.
  • You can fertilize your lawn once a year but not more than that. Do not overdo it. Fertilizers in the right amount are beneficial for your grass but excessive usage will kill the plants.
  • Keep a strict check for any weeds, pests or plant diseases that can occur because these can destroy the health and beauty of your grass, leaving behind an untidy mess.
  • Try to avoid using pesticides and insecticides. They may be helpful in killing pests, but that’s not the only thing they can kill! They have strong harmful chemicals that can ruin your yard.

A tidy front lawn results in a better looking house with an attractive appearance. Moreover, if your yard is well-maintained, the overall value of the house will increase, giving you a higher profit margin. Hence, never leave your yard unkempt. If you cannot manage this work by yourself, hire a professional and don’t worry about the expense because usually your efforts on the appearance of your house are paid back to you in kind.
